Word Crimes

I write a lot...and sometimes I take....liberties.

But generally, I appreciate good writing, spelling and grammar.

At work my colleagues often come to me with questions about them. Indeed, our corporate secretary bought me a cute plaque that says:  "I Am Silently Correcting Your Grammar."

Lately, I've been reading a couple of funny websites that feature "awkward messages" and other language faux pas on Facebook and in texting. Some of them are hilarious. Some are excruciating.

So when I saw this...it really tickled me:

Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

  1. lmao.....structure is good but function is better !
i got chewed out this morning for my liberal use of "..."
I explained it was a creative linkage of different ideas to a common subject or theme.....and as an aide because I didn't think they could focus long enough to read a complex sentence. I then suggested they read newspapers or Hemingway if they wanted short and terse .

  2. I think you're giving your age away. :-)

The "..." and the underline were constructs used on typewriters before we had the option to italicize or bold certain words. I still find myself going there....until I remember I can use the more correct typographical forms.

Quotation Marks really are for quotes.

One other legitimate use is "scare" quotes, used to indicate that the word in quotes means the opposite or at least something different than its common meaning.

    Government "efficiency"...for example.
    Common Core "education".....as another.

    Just my 2¢.
